Georgia freshman Elija Godwin, a member of the U.S. national team last summer at the IAAF U-20 World Championships last summer in Finland, was hospitalized and underwent sugery after an accident at practice Tuesday.

According to reports, Godwin was running backwards as part of a drill when he ran into the end of a javelin that was stuck in the ground at an angle.

The javelin pierced Godwin's back, below his shoulder blade, and he suffered a collapsed left lung.

He is expected to make a full recovery.

Godwin ran personal-best times of 20.59 in the 200 and 45.92 in the 400 meters April 27 at the Torrin Lawrence Invitiatonal.
